Installing A New Garage Door Opener Remote

If you have lost your remote to your garage door opener or you simply are no longer happy with the remote that you have, they are easy to replace. In most cases, there is no need to go back to the original garage door opener manufacturer; there are many different remotes on the market, and installing a new remote can be done quickly and easily, and you don’t need the help of professional garage door repair.

Step One: Find The Learn Code Button

For most traditional garage door styles, including wooden garage doors, the key is to find the “learn code” button on your opener. Every opener model is different, and you may find this button on the bottom or the side of your opener. If you are having trouble, you can usually find the owner’s manual or other assistance online with a quick internet search.

Step Two: Put Your Opener In Programming Mode

Once you have located the button, press it and then release it. You should see a flashing light or hear a beep. This is the indicator that you have located the right button, and that the garage door opener is now in the proper mode to be programmed to your new remote control. These instructions work for most openers and most garage door styles.

Step Three: Teach Your Garage Door Opener Remote

Your new garage door opener will have two or three buttons. You decide which button you want to use to open your garage door. Press that button and hold it down in less than thirty seconds after pressing the learn button.

Step Four: Finish The Process

You can tell you have successfully finished the process when the light or the beeping has stopped. Be sure to test your remote before counting on it to open the door from the outside. With some garage door styles, you may have trouble getting back in if it does not work.

If You Are Not Successful

If you test your remote when you have finished the process, and it does not work, be sure that it has a fresh battery, and then complete the process again. If you are still unsuccessful, you should check the online manual for your garage door opener or check with your local garage door repair experts. Your model may have instructions that are unique to its construction.

A Few Notes

You can use an electric garage door opener with most garage door styles, including aluminum or wooden garage doors. In fact, you can enjoy this modern amenity regardless of what look or style you have chosen.

Many of today’s cars come with built in remote controls. They usually come with their own instructions, which will be similar to those spelled out above. If you do not have one built into your car, you can find a wide variety at many hardware stores, home improvement stores, and the like.
